Plastic Bag-Free Pledge
Worldwide, as many as one trillion plastic bags are used each year—equal to 100 million barrels of oil. A 2015 study estimated that there are more than 15 trillion pieces of plastic trash in the ocean, and growing every year. Additionally at least 267 different species have been affected by plastic pollution in the ocean, and 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic bags annually.
We know that it’s not new news that plastic harms the creatures that call our ocean and waterways home, but we also understand that it can be daunting as an individual to figure out ways to help this growing issue. That is why we are inviting you to take our pledge!
I am officially participating in the Plastic Bag Pledge campaign as part of an effort to reduce plastic pollution my community. As a participant, I pledge to:
- Stop using plastic bags for the next month. Starting on Earth Day, April 22nd, until May 20th, I promise to use other sustainable, zero-waste alternatives to plastic bags.
- Bonus: Advocate for local businesses in my community to stop using plastic bags. This can include talking to your favorite shops or restaurants, or reaching out to local stores asking them to find better alternatives to plastic bags.
